Conservatism and modernization in the context of China’s Self-Strengthening Movement

Abstract: The article analyzes the clash between Chinese conservatism and foreign ideas in a desperate effort to modernize the „Sick Man of Asia“ during the late Quing dynasty. The main thesis will be focusing on the ideological reasons for the movement’s failure to achieve its goals despite implementing new practices and developing modern industrial and military base trough foreign assistance. The exposition will include a short description of the political situation in the wake of the Opium wars and several massive rebellions as well as the most prominent figures of the movement (Li Hongzhang, Zeng Guofan and Zuo Zongtang).
