The competitive Korean society and its problems

Margarita Kichukova, SU„St. Kliment Ohridski”, Korean Studies Dept., FKNF

Abstract:

In the Korean society the meaning of social status can be summarised in one word – all-embracing. Strongly influenced by the opinion of those around the Korean society is, undoubtedly, one of the most competitive in the world. For example, even since childhood Koreans are pushed to study all day long, seven days in the week, without taking physical health, mental stability, socialisation and personal growth into consideration. This kind of social pressure has led to exceptional gap between rich and poor and has turn Koreans into one of the most depressive nations in the world, ranking first in levels of suicide.

Key words: Korea, society, competition, pressure, stress, suicide, depression, beuty standards

Bulgaria and North Korea in the 80-s of the twentieth century

Assoc. Prof. Eugene Kandilarov, Sofia University „St. Kliment Ohridski“, FKNF, CELC, KLCEА

The Limits of Public Diplomacy – the World Heritage Issue and Japan-Korea Relations

Iva Venkova, PhD

Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’, Faculty of History

Abstract

In view of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-Korea bilateral relations, coupled with commemorating 70 years of the formal end of World War II, the year 2015 seems to be a good occasion to take stock of bilateral cultural exchange.

Japan has been pursuing a public and a cultural diplomacy of its own, and has been mounting its own nation-branding effort. In 2015, part of its cultural diplomacy was dedicated to securing a place for Japanese industrial sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The issues surrounding the nomination have sent some ripples in Japan-ROK relations, at diplomatic level but also at the public level, due to entanglement with the complicated issue of history. The objective of this article will be to explore how the issue of cultural heritage was brought up in Japan-ROK relations over the past year, aiming to look into the background and factors affecting the development of the issue. The problem will be approached from the perspective of cultural diplomacy and cultural ties.

Colonial administration in Korea under Japanese rule

Aneliya Kesareva

MP History and Contemporary development of the East Asian Countries (Japan, China, Korea), Sofia „St. Kliment Ohridski” University

Abstract: The aim of the report is to show how the administration functioned at that time, how it was arranged and how it proceeded against the Koreans. The treaty of September 1905 officially ended the war between Japan and Russia and when the Protectorate Treaty was concluded, the office of Resident-General was eastablished. The Japanese became annoyed by the Kojong’s actions during the The Heague Peace Conference held in June 1907. As a result, he was forced to abdicate in favor of his son – Sunjong, who was the last ruler of the Choson dynasty. With the Treaty of Annexation of 1910, Korea became a colony of Japan. It was ruled through the office of a Governor-General. During the period 1910-1919, the Koreans were controlled by gendarmerie-police system. All highеst positions in both central and local governments were held by the Japanese. Saito Makoto, the third Governor-General of Korea succeeded in establishing local administrative systems. The Governor-General’s administration planned to assimilate the Koreans into Japanese culture. The Koreans were forced to abandon their traditional clothes; to stop using their own language; to worship at Shinto shrines and at last – they had to adopt Japanese style names. Every aspect of their lives were controlled by the Japanese and their rules and regulations. That was the period of Japanization from 1931 to August 1945.
